How is Krill Oil Superior to Fish Oil?
The phospholipid structure of the omega-3s found in krill oil makes them easier to absorb than the triglyceride form found in fish, and allows easier entrance into the cells of the body.
• Better absorption – take 1/5 the dose
• 40x more potent antioxidant protection
• Pollution free – 100% pure Antarctic krill
• Better digestion – no fishy aftertaste
• High in antioxidants astaxanthin and canthaxanthin
• Antioxidant content makes kill oil more stable and resistant to rancidity
Aker BioMarine has published a new preclinical study on krill oil showing a notably higher impact on gene regulation in the liver when the omega-3 fatty acids were given as phospholipids (krill oil) versus the triglyceride form (fish oil). Krill oil downregulated the activity of pathways concerned with hepatic glucose production and the synthesis of lipids and cholesterol in mice.
One simple food – guaranteed to improve your health.
The NutriStart Difference
Superba Krill uses only Marine Stewardship Council endorsed eco-harvesting methods that result in minimal environmental impact. The innovative and sustainable krill harvesting methods will ensure future generations can benefit from this incredible nutrition-packed resource.
Before NutriStart considered marketing krill oil we had to be convinced that it was harvested in a sustainable manner. The Superba krill oil that we use is produced by the Norwegian firm Aker BioMarine. Aker BioMarine tracks krill from catch to sale, a concept called traceability. Their supply has 100% traceability throughout the entire supply chain and can even be traced back to the exact GPS coordinates where the krill was harvested. Aker’s proprietary harvesting technique eliminates by-catch by releasing other sealife back into the waters unharmed. Third-party onboard observers have reported zero by-catch.
Aker Biomarine is the only krill oil supplier to manage their own fishery. Full vertical integration allows for Aker Biomarine to control quality throughout the supply chain and appropriately allocate the richest raw material to oil production. When you see the Superbatm logo on krill products, you know that you are receiving a sustainably-harvested product. Aker actively collaborates with CCAMLR (www.ccamir.org) and WWF Norway (www.wwf.org) to observe and protect the resources of the Southern Ocean, promote sustainable harvesting, promote traceability of fishery products, promote eco-friendly harvesting and combat illegal fishing. Aker welcomes third-party scientific observers onboard their boats to utilize their onboard laboratory as a base for scientific research and observation of the ecosystem.
Superba krill oil has received certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (www.msc.org), an independent, global, non-profit organization that works to promote the best choices in sustainable seafood. The position of the MSC on current harvest of krill is as follows:
“Harvest of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba ) is very low – less than 1 per cent of the most recent estimated biomass. The management authority for the fishery is the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which was established in part to address concerns that an increase in krill catches in the Southern Ocean could have a serious effect on populations of krill. CCAMLR has adopted a very precautionary approach designed to ensure fishing activities minimize risks to the krill population. Further, for the season 2007/08, the total landings (by all boats operating in the area) were 150,000 tonnes – just four per cent of the total allowable catch set by CCAMLR.”

Superba™Krill Oil and NutriKrill Frequently Asked Questions
What is krill?
Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans found mostly in the Antarctic and Northern Pacific Oceans. Though tiny in size, krill make up the largest animal biomass on the planet. They feed mostly on phytoplankton and, being near the bottom of the food chain, are eaten by fish, penguins, seals, squid and whales.Like fish oil, krill oil contains Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) but, unlike fish oil where the fatty acids are found in the triglyceride form, they are bound in a phospholipid structure. This form of structure is the same as the fats in our own cell walls.
How is krill oil different from fish oil?
The phospholipid structure of the Omega 3s found in krill oil makes them more absorbable than the triglyceride form found in fish, and allows easier entrance into the cells of the body. In essence this means a rapid absorption rate in the body. Another benefit is that krill oil does not “repeat” (burping fish taste) on people, the way some fish oils can.Krill oil naturally contains vitamins A, D and E and, unlike fish oil, also contains astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant derived from algae that the krill eat. This algae produces the red pigment astaxanthin that give krill, lobster and shrimp their reddish color (some is also found in salmon oil). The presence of this antioxidant makes krill oil over 40 times more potent than fish oil in terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) values. Astaxanthin has been shown to protect the skin against UV-induced skin damage. This increased antioxidant capacity also means that krill oil is more stable and will have a longer shelf life than fish oil. Astaxanthin, unlike most antioxidants, has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, where it has the potential to protect the brain, eye and central nervous system from free-radical damage.Fish oils that are “pharmaceutical grade” have had the solvent hexane used in the process whereas krill oil is extraction with food grade ethanol as a solvent.
What are the benefits of krill?
Clinical studies have shown krill oil to have many proven benefits to human health. These studies use standard fish oil instead of placebo and the benefits actually show the advantages of krill over fish oil.
• Reduces LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and raises HDL (“good”) cholesterol
• Lowers C-reactive protein levels
• Lowers blood sugar levels
• Reduces pain and inflammation caused by arthritis
• Reduced symptoms of PMS and dysmenorrhea (extremely painful periods)
• Effective in treatment of adult ADHD
