What Does Vitamin K Actually Do? Vitamin K was originally discovered because of its essential role in normal blood clotting. Vitamin K is required to activate a family of proteins known as vitamin K-dependent proteins. Two of these have attracted particular scientific interest: Osteocalcin, which is produced by bone-forming cells and participates in normal bone mineralization. Matrix Gla protein, or MGP, which is found in blood vessels and other tissues and is involved in the biological regulation of calcification

Why Vitamin K2? Vitamin K isn’t one single substance. Vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, is found predominantly in green leafy vegetables and plays an important role in normal blood clotting. Vitamin K2 refers to a family of compounds called menaquinones. These include forms such as MK-4 and MK-7. Quick K2 uses MK-7. MK-7 has a relatively long life in the body, allowing it to remain available in circulation longer than some shorter-chain forms of vitamin K. That’s one of the reasons MK-7 has become such a popular form for daily K2 supplementation.

Why MK-7 Instead of MK-4? Both are forms of vitamin K2. But they’re not interchangeable milligram for milligram. MK-4 has been studied at relatively high doses—often measured in milligrams—while MK-7 is typically used in much smaller microgram doses. MK-7 also remains in circulation considerably longer. Small amount. Long-lasting form. Easy daily dosing.

K2 and Bone Health This is one of the strongest reasons for the scientific interest in vitamin K2. Bone isn’t simply calcium. It’s living tissue that is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. One protein involved in that process is osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is produced by osteoblasts—the cells involved in building bone—but it requires vitamin K-dependent carboxylation to function normally. Clinical studies have shown that vitamin K2 supplementation can improve measures of osteocalcin carboxylation. Some studies have also reported benefits involving bone mineral density or bone strength, particularly in certain populations. But the evidence isn’t consistent enough to promise that taking K2 will prevent osteoporosis or fractures. The better conclusion is: Vitamin K has an established biological role in normal bone metabolism.

Matrix Gla protein is a vitamin K-dependent protein involved in regulating calcification within blood vessels. Without adequate vitamin K, MGP can’t become fully activated. That’s real biology. Human trials also show that vitamin K supplementation can improve markers of MGP activation. Some randomized-trial analyses have even reported encouraging effects on the progression of coronary artery calcification. Vitamin K2 activates proteins involved in normal calcium regulation, including MGP, and researchers continue to investigate what that may mean for long-term cardiovascular health.

K2 and Vitamin D: Different Jobs, Related Biology- Vitamin D and vitamin K are often sold together. There’s a good reason for that—but they’re not the same nutrient. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Vitamin K helps activate proteins involved in how calcium is incorporated and regulated in tissues. That gives the two vitamins complementary roles in normal bone and calcium metabolism. Quick K2 is ideal for someone who already takes vitamin D and wants the freedom to add K2 separately. That’s actually one of its biggest advantages. You’re not locked into a predetermined D3/K2 ratio. You control the K2 independently.

Why a Liquid? Because taking supplements consistently matters more than having an impressive bottle sitting in the cupboard. Quick K2 is a virtually tasteless liquid. There are no large capsules to swallow, and the drop format makes it easy to incorporate into your existing supplement routine. That’s especially useful if you’re already taking several vitamins or medications every day.

What Does the Science Really Say? Vitamin K2 research is genuinely interesting. We have strong evidence that vitamin K is required to activate proteins such as osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein. Human supplementation trials also demonstrate that K2 can improve biochemical measures of vitamin K status and increase carboxylation of these proteins. Some randomized-trial analyses have reported encouraging effects on vascular calcification. Other analyses—particularly in people with chronic kidney disease—have found improvements in vitamin K biomarkers.

    Who Is Quick K2 For?

Quick K2 may be particularly useful if you:

    • Want to supplement vitamin K2 independently from vitamin D
    • Want nutritional support for normal bone health
    • Are interested in healthy calcium metabolism
    • Already take vitamin D but don’t need more of it
    • Prefer liquid supplements over capsules
    • Want flexible drop dosing
    • Want K2 specifically in the MK-7 form
    • Want a simple, affordable daily K2 supplement
    Frequently Asked Questions

What form of vitamin K is in Quick K2? Quick K2 uses vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7, or MK-7.

Why does NutriStart use MK-7? MK-7 has a relatively long half-life compared with some other forms of vitamin K and is effective at relatively small microgram amounts, making it well suited to daily supplementation.

Is K2 the same as K1?No. Both belong to the vitamin K family, but they’re different compounds. Vitamin K1 is found predominantly in green leafy vegetables, while vitamin K2 refers to a family of menaquinones, including MK-4 and MK-7.

Does K2 put calcium into my bones? That’s an oversimplification. Vitamin K is required to activate osteocalcin, a protein involved in normal bone mineralization. So K2 participates in the biology of bone and calcium metabolism, but it doesn’t simply “push” calcium into bone.

Does K2 remove calcium from arteries? That hasn’t been established. Vitamin K activates matrix Gla protein, which is involved in the regulation of vascular calcification, and some clinical research is encouraging. But current evidence doesn’t prove that K2 supplementation removes existing arterial calcium or prevents cardiovascular disease.

Should I take K2 with vitamin D? They can be taken together and have complementary roles in bone and calcium metabolism. But not everyone who takes vitamin D necessarily needs supplemental K2. One advantage of Quick K2 is that it allows you to control your K2 intake independently from your vitamin D.

Why choose liquid K2 instead of a capsule? Convenience and flexibility. Quick K2 is easy to take and allows drop dosing without adding another capsule to your daily routine.

Can I take Quick K2 if I use warfarin? Do not start vitamin K supplementation without speaking with your healthcare professional if you take warfarin or another vitamin K-antagonist medication. Changing vitamin K intake can interfere with the intended action of these medications.

The Bottom LineVitamin K2 doesn’t need claims about preventing cancer, Alzheimer’s disease or heart attacks to make it interesting. Its real biology is compelling enough.Vitamin K is required to activate proteins involved in normal bone mineralization and calcium regulation, and MK-7 provides a convenient, long-lasting form of K2 for daily supplementation.

K2 as MK-7. Easy liquid drops. No unnecessary ingredients. Excellent everyday value.
