Why Choose Liposomal Vitamin C?
While vitamin C is generally well absorbed in most people, it does not remain in circulation for long (generally only a couple of hours). As well, some people find vitamin C to cause digestive disturbances or a laxative effect. And, for those missing a portion of their intestinal tract (due to surgery for Crohn’s disease or cancer), or with extreme digestive disorders (celiac disease for example), nutrient absorption is an ongoing problem.
Liposomal vitamin C was tested against the most effective, longest-retained form of vitamin C (ascorbate). The liposomal vitamin C proved to be better absorbed and retained for longer than buffered vitamin C (sodium ascorbate). (See graph below.)
What Does Liposomal Mean?
Liposomal technology was pioneered for pharmaceutical drugs, and the improved therapeutic value and greatly increased delivery of liposome-encapsulated drugs and nutrients has been consistently validated scientifically. Until recently, liposomes were used exclusively by the drug industry, but now liposomes are beginning to be used for the specific oral delivery of certain dietary and nutritional supplements.
Currently, liposomes are believed to be the most bioavailable oral way to deliver nutrients to the body, being especially effective for herbs and nutrients that are poorly absorbed, and/or easily damaged by the digestive system.
Making a liposome starts with liquid micro particles of the material one wishes to use (in this case vitamin C) which are then inserted into phosphatidylcholine, which is a fat-soluble medium. This essentially creates micro-bubbles (just a few millionths of an inch in diameter), which are capable of entering through the gut lining without being digested, or damaged by harsh stomach acids.
These bubbles then travel through the bloodstream and are absorbed as needed by various cells in the body. Because liposomes are made of material similar to what cells are made of (phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid, which is a component of all cell membranes), the nutrients that they carry are easily delivered directly into the cell.
Creating liposomes is an expensive and time consuming process, which is why such products cost more than simple encapsulated drugs or nutrients, and why few companies produce liposomal products. NutriStart’s Liposomal Vitamin C product is manufactured by a lab that specializes in liposomal products, using their proprietary Cold Structure TechnologyTM. This means that the product was never exposed to high temperatures or pressure, which could damage delicate nutrients.
Phosphatidylcholine
Many studies have found Phosphatidylcholine supplements can improve learning, aid memory, help promote healthy skin elasticity, and support liver function. Phosphatidylcholine is particularly good at improving short-term memory, and removing fatty deposits off the liver. Since clinical effectiveness of this phospholipid begins at 400mg daily, one or two servings of our liposomal vitamin C has the added bonus of feeding the body useful amounts of this important nutrient.
Liposomal Vitamin C Specifications
Each 5 ml serving (just over 1 teaspoon) provides 1,000mg of Vitamin C (as sodium ascorbate, ascorbic acid) and 400mg of natural (non-hydrogenated) Phosphatidylcholine. OTHER INGREDIENTS: Purified water, natural flavors, potassium sorbate. Natural flavors are fruit and berry extracts and contain no MSG. Vegan. Tested Non-GMO, gluten and soy free. Some people may prefer to take dose in water or juice. However, the flavor of liposomal vitamin C is milder, the viscosity lower, and the liposomes clear the mouth quicker, than other liposomal products. Thus it tastes better and can also just be taken undiluted, under the tongue.
Does Liposomal Vitamin C Have to be Refrigerated?
Our liposomal products are quite stable and are okay out of refrigeration during transit. Only extreme temperatures (over 120 degrees) will affect the product.
The keep refrigerated direction is just so consumers will be conscientious about how they store their product (e.g. do not keep in hot car during the hot summer). Many people do not refrigerate the product (except in the heat of summer), in which case it is best to consume it within a month. If you have doubts about the product, after being stored at room temperature for some time, pour some into a spoon. If the product curdles this is a sign that it’s spoiled.
