VITASHINE D3 from Lichen

NutriStart Vegan D3 uses the patented VITASHINE product, the only plant-based form of vitamin D3 available on the market today. VITASHINE is a 100% vegan and vegetarian Vitamin D3 product. It is registered with the Vegan Society and the Vegetarian Society, and research data has been validated by independent laboratories.

This vegan-friendly Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) comes from an organic plant source called lichen. Lichens are small plant species consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus with algae. This gives them the ability to grow and accumulate meaningful levels of useful nutrients, including Vitamin D3. This selected strain of lichen has been proven to contain Vitamin D3, and has been used in foods for centuries, and continues to be used today.

The company that discovered this novel form of vitamin D3, developed a system to extract the oil in a totally light, heat and moisture controlled environment, to ensure stability of the nutrient. This is done at the site where the sustainably grown lichen is obtained, to ensure optimum freshness.

Vitamin D2 Vs Vitamin D3

As a supplement, vitamin D comes in two forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) prepared from ultraviolet irradiation of ergosterol, a form of yeast derived from the mould ergot, or from mushrooms subjected to ultraviolet light; and Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), prepared from lanolin (from sheep’s wool) irradiated with ultraviolet light, or derived from fish liver oil.

While, vitamin D3 is similar to the form of vitamin D produced in the body after exposure to sunshine, the same does not hold true for vitamin D2. The scientific community has generally regarded these two forms of vitamin D as equivalent, but this belief is based on studies related to rickets prevention in infants, that were conducted around 70 years ago. In fact, recent studies are now proving that D2 is an inferior form of vitamin D, and that D3 is the most efficient form of vitamin D, when it comes to oral supplementation for the maintenance of good health.

Vegans and Vitamin D from Mushrooms

Vegans are opposed to taking vitamin D3 supplements since they are derived from animal products, so they have only one choice, which is vitamin D2, either synthetic ergocalciferol, or D2 sourced from mushrooms. Mushrooms are moderately high in vitamin D, and this amount can be further increased by subjecting them to extra ultraviolet light. But, however natural the mushroom-derived form of vitamin D is, it is still in the form of D2. And, a recent study has shown that, although this natural form of D2 does not cause muscle damage, like the synthetic D2, it still manages to reduce blood levels of D3, and offers no apparent benefits.

The purpose of this study was to determine if supplementation with vitamin D2 would enhance skeletal muscle function and reduce exercise-induced muscle damage, in high school athletes, who already had low vitamin D levels. Participants were randomly given either Portobello mushroom powder (600 IU vitamin D2) or placebo for 6 weeks.

The conclusion was: “Changes in skeletal muscle function and circulating markers of skeletal muscle damage did not differ between groups. In conclusion, 600 IU/d vitamin D2 increased 25(OH)D2 with a concomitant decrease in 25(OD)D3, with no effect on muscular function or exercise-induced muscle damage in high school athletes.” (“Influence of vitamin D mushroom powder supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage in vitamin D insufficient high school athletes.” J Sports Sci. 2013 Oct 11)

The inescapable conclusion is that, like everyone, vegans need to ensure that they are getting vitamin D3, and if they cannot acquire enough of it from sunshine, they should use a supplement that is not based on vitamin D2. With this new lichen-derived D3, vegans at last have a natural, plant-based form of vitamin D3 to give them all the health benefits that they have been missing out on.
